I never understood why people would spend more money for silly little items like camera strap options. I mean, did your equipment come with straps? Most likely. So why spend even more money to get yet another camera strap? What could possibly motivate this wasteful and useless behavior?

Then I started moving away from my tripod. I would be out in nature, hiking, climbing, you name it. Tripods really aren’t that useful in that arena. In fact, it’s really just more to carry. Taking action shots is a whole other ball game. So I would use my generic camera strap more and more. You know, the one that the manufacturer throws in with your original purchase. The one that is smothered with advertisements of their logos… that one.

Well, it started to get clearer as to why people invest more money in a different camera strap than those that come with the original purchase. The generic types of camera strap are not made that well. They fray easily and have clumsy, cheap attachment hooks and rings. That’s not the worst part about the generic camera strap, though. The worst part is that they are so very, outrageously, incredibly, inconveniently and in all other ways, uncomfortable.

The main purpose of the camera strap, aside from carrying your equipment, is to make it easier for you to use and to carry in a comfortable way. Many just use a single strap to carry their picture taking equipment around. For those who are not working long hours or moving around extensively, this is adequate. Camera Straps

There are several ways to carry around your photo taker. The novices use the generic single camera straps that come with the equipment. The slightly more experienced will put it in a case that is stuffed into a pocket or a backpack. Either way, the generic single camera straps are not the way to go.

They have presented too many problems for me over the years. When you’re shooting in the field, the way you carry your equipment greatly affects your shots. Camera straps have evolved. They are not all uncomfortable, believe it or not. You do have options.

Many of the higher graded single camera straps have extra padding sewn in to make it more comfortable. These camera straps can range from $25 and up. One of the main concerns, aside from the fact that a little extra padding doesn’t really help that much, is also that these companies blast their logos all over these camera straps.

Call me crazy, but I don’t want to pay money and advertise for other people. If I’m going to pay money, I should get to advertise my own thing. I don’t want their logos all over my equipment. Besides, if I’m spending more money on a padded strap, it had better take 95% or more of the pressure off my neck, which frankly, it just doesn’t.

Camera straps that hang around the neck on a single band are outdated. They are uncomfortable. They are not practical. They do not protect your equipment. They let your gear swing around and bang into anything as you move. And well, moving around is pretty important in your line of work. That’s why the single camera straps are out. What you really need is a harness.

Harnesses work well because you can get them to work with nearly any type of camera or binocular set, for that matter. They evenly distribute the weight over your shoulders, back and chest and take away the neck pain you used to get with your camera straps. They protect your gear by not allowing it to swing but are convenient to bring to eye level or even detach quickly for whatever reason. Optics Harness

Let me just tell you I have finally found what I’ve been looking for my whole life – an optics harness.  It has taken a very long time. I don’t know where it’s been hiding. I’ve always known I’ve wanted something like this, but that’s just it. I didn’t know it existed!! An optics harness does exist though, and now that I’ve found her, I think I’ll die happy.

Of course, like any newly converted member of any religion, I have to share the truth. Ha ha! This isn’t a conventional religion, though. This is the belief in a few simple but profound truths.
